“Dreams of Nowhere” – Exploring The Agora Trilogy

by David Whitley

A Multimedia Presentation

My books, The Midnight Charter, The Children of the Lost and The Canticle of Whispers are set in imagined lands, controlled by all-powerful ideals. In this event, we take a look at the fascinating concept of “the perfect place” – Utopia, the heaven on earth, and the idealistic dreams and chilling realities that this longing has created throughout history and literature.

Adapted to my audience, I explore ideas of Utopia from ancient times to the present day, from deadly serious to utterly bizarre, and explain how these ideal lands have helped me to create my fantasy worlds. I show some beautiful images of dreams, visions and fantastic places to illustrate my thoughts, and I involve everyone in an interactive game where the audience and I build our own world. I conclude with a lively question and answer session, plus a book signing.

In schools, I am happy to address students from multiple years, either together or in separate groups. This event can also be adapted to an adult audience, and has been enjoyed by everyone from the British Council in Sharjah to the Society of Authors!

The event as a whole takes approximately an hour – 45 minutes for the main presentation, including the “world building game” and discussions, and 15 minutes of Q&A. And if this is a school visit, and the pupils have been studying something in class that dovetails with this event, (it fits with a whole range of subjects from Ancient Greece to Orwell, Empire to American independence) I’d be pleased to incorporate it, given a little notice. This event can be adapted to fit your timetable, and can be followed by a book signing.
